Carpentry question, regarding floor? | |
I have a 6x10 foot area I want to put plywood down for flooring. I have joists that are 6 feet long, every 16 inches. Can I put 3/4 inch plywood (grain going the against the joists) without any other support, such as cross spacers? Will the plywood bow a little without extra support?
Thanks.
Answers:
1If you are running the plywood perpendicular to the joists, you'll want to use 3/4 t&g. If it's regular 3/4 plywood (no tongue & groove), you'll either need to brace between the joists where the seams butt (to support what would normally be supported with a t&g), or since it's only a 6' span, run the plywood lengthways with the joists, butting the sheets so they break over a joist. In either case, use a sub-floor adhesive.
If you need bracing, it is to support the edges of the plywood without a t&g. You don't need it as bridging in a 6' span. In 6', theres no room for the lumber to twist.
